April Joys & Favorites

JOYS!
Easter! (Or, in our house, more like Eostre!) Mads found all the hidden eggs in the living room immediately, at expert level.  Note to the Easter Bunny: you'll have to work a lot harder next year.
Our Ella Bella is 2 years old!
Everything is spring timin'.
Mads has been exploring LOTS of new playgrounds and the like.
Mads has also been spending a lot of time with his great-grandma, who's been doing some babysitting for us.  My grandma's always been the most magical person in my life, and I'm so happy she has the opportunity to play a big role in my son's life.
April showers! (And storms!)
And, perhaps the biggest and deepest joy for me this month: at the age of 30 I finally got my driver's license.  As Wolfman said, "Congratulations on becoming a legal vehicular menace."
Favorites!
Favorite Acquisition - At the end of the month, an accidental (I swear!) trip to the Apex Goodwill resulted in a handful of good finds, but my favorite was this purple, floppy dragon.  Normally, I wouldn't bring home a stuffed animal from a thrift store, but I recognized this particular stuffed animal--he used to be a string puppet, he was hand-created and sold at the Lazy Daze craft festival a number of years ago, and I know this because I have a couple of his brothers at my grandma's house.  Likely, his strings got tangled, snipped, and then he was boxed up and donated. I just couldn't not adopt him.  He lives on the back of our sofa now, lounging like a purple, winged house cat.
Favorite Supplement - Since turning 30, food has turned against me.  I still love food, but certain things--like dairy, baked goods (particularly yeasty breads and sweets), and even raw vegetables--have turned decidedly anti-my gut.  I picked up some chewable probiotics at Earth Fare, and while my digestive issues are not completely gone, they've certainly mellowed a bit.  I mean, I can eat my morning toast (with butter and honey yum) now without suffering too terribly for it.
Favorite Beauty Product - Seriously. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.  I was just talking to my co-workers about this: you know in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, how Toula's father sprays Windex on everything because he thinks it's a cure-all?  That's me and raw apple cider vinegar.  I use it to wash my hair, I use it to tone my skin, I drink a diluted solution of it for my digestive ailments, my immune system, and longevity, and I'm finding new uses for it daily.  I am this close to pouring it in a spray bottle and carrying it with me everywhere I go.
Favorite Publication - Faerie Magazine is a new discovery for me.  My grandma handed it to me while I sat in her living room watching Mads play, and I as I skimmed its pages, I immediately fell through the rabbit hole into a dreamy little springtime world full of magick.
Favorite Book - Territory by Emma Bull.  I learned about Territory a few years ago, in my Shelfari days, but it wasn't until working on a project with my husband and friend Bruce (which will remain undisclosed for the moment), that I decided I definitely needed to read this book, a fantasy western retelling of the shoot-out at the OK Corral (or, actually, the preceding events). I've read two biographies of Doc Holliday (as well as named one of my grandma's cats Doc) if that tells you anything of my interest in this story.  The fantasy element was beautiful and seamless, and I recommend this book to fans of fantasies and westerns both, or just fans of good story telling and characterization. In particular, the relationship between Doc and Wyatt Earp was so right, so needful and melancholy and bound.  Bookslut did a much better review of the book here
Favorite Television Show - Trailer Park Boys, season 9.  Trailer Park Boys is one of those things I recommend to everyone, knowing full well it's not a show for everyone. I just recommend it on the off chance that somebody else (like my Grandma, for instance) might love it the way Wolfman and I do, which is as if these characters are real people, family, indulgently and unconditionally. Netflix recently released a 9th season of the show, which has been around for nearly 15 years now, on and off, with movies and stage shows.  I'm calling it.  Trailer Park Boys is the next Doctor Who.
Favorite Movie - Guardians of the Galaxy (2013). I had no idea what Guardians of the Galaxy was, even while selling the costumes at Halloween Alley last October to little kids.  Wolfman had to tell me it was a Marvel thing, and as we're doing a catch-up of all the Marvel movies we missed while caring for an infant, we watched it this month.  It was cute. Chris Pratt is cute. It probably wouldn't have been my favorite movie this month, if not for the fact that we didn't watch a lot of movies (in fact, we only watched three), but it was cute.  I'd watch it again.
Favorite Music - Christopher Paul Stelling. All these flowers blooming, everything turning green had me in the mood for Sufjan Stevens and Ray LaMontagne and Nick Drake--pretty man voices accompanied by pretty guitar.

February Joys & Favorites

Joys!

Though we don't really do Valentine's Day big, Wolfman never fails to bring me home some chocolates.  Considerate and a cute butt?  How'd I get so lucky?

We made a brief day-trip to Pittsboro, and it was a lovely way to spend a gloomy day.

It snowed! (A couple times, actually).

Favorites!
Favorite Shops: Rocket Fizz and Duck Donuts. Rocket Fizz is a candy and soda pop store franchise out of California.  Our Rocket Fizz was recommended to us by our friends the Wiests, and once we visited for the first time I realized Santa Claus did a lot of our stocking stuffer shopping at Rocket Fizz as well.  This place is just plain fun.  Our first visit, we spent a little over $30 on candy and specialty sodas (a bacon chocolate soda for Wolfman and maple soda for me--which tasted exactly like carbonated maple syrup).  No regrets.
The Rocket Fizz Knight
Duck Donuts is a North Carolina franchise, hailing from the Outer Banks (Woot!). My grandma happened to see it from the passenger seat of her car as she rode home from a doctor's appointment with my grandpa and demanded at once, "Turn the car around!"  We take donuts seriously in this family, and "cake donuts made to order" are words I have been waiting to hear my entire life.
Favorite Treats: Marich Chocolates coconut curry cashews and Welch's PB&J snacks.  Wolfman found the Marich cashews for me at our first trip to Rocket Fizz (and I have since been back expressly for just them) and the PB&J snacks we came across at the Family Dollar next to our Laundromat.  They're a perfect laundry day treat.
If you can't tell, most of the PB&J snacks were gone by the time I thought to snap this photo.
Favorite Beverage: Benjamin Vineyards Scuppernong Grape Juice.  Ingredients: scuppernong grape juice.
Favorite Acquisitions: Early in the month, and completely unexpectedly, Wolfman gave me this little sketch of our family drawn by a regular customer at the cafĂ©, Pete "The Greek" Galifianakis (uncle to Zach).  It's based upon a picture of the three of us taken way back when Mads was still so new, which Wolfman carries with him.
Also, I bought myself a yellow Valentine's Day dress (Wolfman loves me in the color yellow) for $8 from the Butterfly Exchange at BeYOUtiful Butterfly in Cary as well as a couple pairs of funky leggings on sale (two for one!) from the boutique.
Favorite Movie: Death Proof.  After watching Double Dare a couple years ago (because I am such a hardcore Xena fan), I, like Quentin Tarantino, fell madly, deeply in love with Zoe Bell.  There are a lot of reasons I love this movie (like Kurt Russell's busted face), but lets just simplify it to Zoe Bell and her insane car stunt for the sake of keeping this blog post short.  Honorable Mentions: Pumping Iron and Starship Troopers. (Unlike last month, this was a good one for movie watching.)
Favorite Music: Uriah Heep.  When Wolfman picked up that Camel album I was listening to on repeat last month, he also picked up Uriah Heep's greatest hits on vinyl.  Every November, Wolfman and I attend the Carolina Renaissance Festival in Huntersville, which ushers in a time of fancy and fantasy for me--we build fires in our hearth, put stews and soups to bubble in our crockpot, fill out flasks with brown liquor, and I read the next installments of my big, fat, epic fantasy sagas.  Uriah Heep is one of the bands that fits perfectly with this theme for me.  I think Matrim Cauthon and Zeddicus Z'ul Zorander would dig Uriah Heep.
Favorite Television: Grounded for Life.  Easily one of the most underrated sitcoms ever, it's now streaming on Netflix! Watching Grounded for Life is like drinking a red slushee and eating an order of French fries with mustard--that's what comfort food was for me in 2001, when this show first aired. We also spent the month of February re-watching a lot of Bob's Burgers and The Cleveland Show, two favorites; laughter is the best medicine for the February doldrums.

Wolfman's Favorites!

Favorite Television: Danger 5.  It makes sense that Wolfman would be so fond of this Australian, pulp-inspired, cartoonish World War II spoof; watching this show is a little like what being dropped inside his head might feel like.

Favorite Internet Thing: Lars Andersen's archery.  After he came across this video, he excitedly showed this to everyone he knows.  This video reinvigorated Wolfman's love of archery.

Martigan's Favorites!
First time: Mads drove a coin-operated car at the mall for the first time this month.  Truly, he would've been satisfied just sitting in the thing.
Note the black eye. Our little bruiser.
Favorite Food: Whole bananas!  I don't know why it took me so long to give this boy a whole banana (as opposed to slicing one up for him), but he loves it!
Favorite Books: Martigan has really been loving the baby's first words kind of books in our collection, including The Baby's Catalogue by Janet and Allen Ahlberg, which I enjoyed when I was a wee one (our copy has crayon scribbles all over it, contributed by yours truly back in the 80's).  I have to admit these are not always my favorite books to read him--they can be a little tedious, especially upon repeating. But, I try never to refuse to read a book to him--he's always loved books, and I want that to be a lifelong love.
The Disney Baby My First Words book was a Christmas gift from our friends the Breatons.
Favorite Pastime: Much to Mama's chagrin, Bubba loves getting into the game and records cabinet.
Caught in the act.

January Joys & Favorites

My Christmas cactus, given to me years ago by a former co-worker, in bloom for the first time ever.

Waking early in the morning to make Wolfman breakfast before he leaves for work.

Finding an old tin box in the back yard thicket, hidden years ago by Wolfman when he was still a boy, and breaking it open to find old fire crackers and a triceratops toy.

Favorite beverages: Davidson Organic's coconut & vanilla rooibos tea and Old North State Winery's (of Mount Airy) Restless Soul red table wine (which comes, as a bonus favorite, with a ghost story on its label).

Favorite product: Bitty Bettys Liberty perfume.  Not typically a perfume girl (by which I mean, not at all a perfume girl) and though Santa mostly stuffed this in my stocking because of the cute bottle, I was surprised by how much I enjoy the light, citrusy scent.

Favorite acquisitions: Shell & Rope asymmetrical belt purchased for $2 at the Cat Angels Thrift Store in Cary, a turquoise and faux pearl necklace and bracelet set generously given to me by my boss, April, and a cheery chevron & polka dot wipe-able tablecloth given to me by my sister.

Favorite movie: Sharknado 2: The Second One

Favorite book: Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurtry.  I'm re-reading the Lonesome Dove Saga and not regretting that decision at all.

Favorite music: Camel's The Snow GooseWolfman brought a vinyl copy of this album home at the end of December, and I've been playing it incessantly.

Martigan's favorites: Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger, Highlight's Hello Magazine, and Pee Wee's PlayhouseBoth Grandfather Twilight and Pee Wee's Playhouse were favorites of mine when I was a little, and I'm enjoying revisiting them with my boy.
