In high school, I was obsessed with the plaid skirt. This is one of a handful I owned.
Wolfman used to call these my funky mom shoes.
My autumn leaf skirt! Another much beloved piece of my high school wardrobe.
Sierra gave me these earrings. She bought them at the Greensboro flea market, and I get so many compliments on them every year.
My NC State Fair outfit. I flashed people going down a fun house slide, or would have were it not for opaque tights.
I bought this necklace second hand for my Roman costume for Latin class.
This is Halloween. This is Halloween.
Pirate pencil skirt!
My sister also owns this skirt. We bought them together at TJ Maxx.
Harem pants, in case you were questioning my boho street cred.
I get real witchy in Autumn.
I wasn't so much accessorizing with my reading material as building an entire outfit around it.
I dyed this once-white skirt. Even before having a baby me wearing white was a disaster waiting to happen.
I also dyed this little cardigan and then used it to dress up like an Autumn fairy.
I bought this furry leopard print thing in a thrift store in Los Angeles. The only explanation I can think to explain its existence is that it was made for and worn by a hooker. To lessen the Pretty Woman effect of the thing, I paired it with some Denise Huxtable flats. Adding a dash of Denise Huxtable to an outfit is never a bad idea.
I found this tunic in a little boutique in Ventura, California when I visited my friend, Bree. Every time I wear it, it loses more beads.
After the last What I Wore post, the first one I should say, I was wondering if all of this was too silly, too unnecessary. But, I had Mads in my lap as I scrolled through the post for a final edit, and he pointed at the screen and said, "OooOOoooh, Mommy!" So, here is Part 2, to be followed by a Part 3 (and then I'll be done, for now anyways).
My college roommate, McKenzie, gave me these earrings. They are among my most complimented pieces of jewelry.
This little cardigan is among the plethora I bought with my employee discount when I worked for Christopher & Banks. I donated all but one of them in recent years, and now that I see it in this picture, I'm not sure why.
Wolfman bought me these earrings unexpectedly, one of his for-no-reason gifts, made out of guitar picks by a student at the music studio where he taught that year.
This pin is among my greatest thrift finds in my illustrious thrifting career.
My pal Selena commented on Flickr when I first posted this photo to tell me she loved this outfit. This is, indeed, a very Selena outfit (I am always inspired by her wardrobe). She's a bright color wearing kind of gal, and red, in particular, is her signature.
Of course I didn't actually wear these shoes, but they look pretty in the picture.
I remember my grandma wearing this blouse so often in my childhood.
My brother, Dusty, brought me these Jesus earrings from Mexico, and my sister, Sierra, gave me the ring for one of my birthdays.
This skirt never fit me right, which always made me so sad because it was a favorite.
I recently started using ye olde Flickr account. Once upon a time, my use of Flickr was intense to fanatical & religious, but in recent years my uploads have been sporadic. However, a recent loss of a few months' photos on my computer led me back to Flickr; as many backups as possible is a good idea. Once there, I took a walk around, exploring all my old albums and falling into nostalgia over that time BB (Before Baby), when it was just me with my little snap & shoot, making a compulsive photographic record of my new husband's handsome face at every angle, the food we ate, the flowers in bloom, and what I wore.
The year: 2011. In 2011, personal style blogs abounded on the internet. Now, most personal style blogs still in existence, the ones that have remained fresh(ish) and interesting(esque), have evolved into lifestyle blogs. That's a good thing! But, it was a nice diversion from a work day full of data entry to pop over to a style blog and ogle the contents of a stranger's closet. (My favorite, by far, was Second Skin.) Inspired by those blogs, but moreso by my longtime friend and penpal, Kath, who was in the habit of recording her own sartorial adventures at that time, I started taking my own self-portraits. I was very secretive about the whole thing, though, and never posted them anywhere. Or, if I did, I didn't advertise that I did. I told myself it was a record for me and me alone; I'm not sure how true that was at the time, but now I realize it was probably a record for me and five-years-later me alone.
I stopped trying to photograph my outfits, though I never stopped creating ensembles and experimenting, trying new things, retrying old things, honing and refining my style. I just stopped with the camera because I just wasn't very good at self-portraits. I didn't have the right equipment, to start--a tripod, a remote, a professional-grade camera. But, more to my disadvantage was the fact that I just never got comfortable with what I was doing (it was embarrassing), likely because I just wasn't that comfortable in front of a camera. Each photo I took of myself was subject to my own harsh, unforgiving scrutiny. I always thought I looked frumpy, messy, kind of goofy, really. Which is why it was so surprising when I looked at those photos today and realized how damn adorable I was. That itty bitty waist, those gigantic ragdoll eyes, that nest of baby dreads wrapped in scarves and nets, the whole business casual hippie vibe I was grooving. I was buxom and whimsical and adventurous. This is what I saw in those photos now, so far from what I saw then, which is a lesson in self-image I am constantly relearning (i.e. years from now, I will think current/present me is damn adorable when I look back on photos of these days, so on these current days when I look upon my reflection with disapproval and stinkeye, why don't I just assume I'm being crazy and am in actuality damn adorable, always).
This post is not just a message-to-self (and you by proxy if you're reading this) about self-image; it's not just a vain celebration of like, seriously, the tiniest waist ever (I still have what would be called an hourglass figure post-partum, but it's no longer that cartoonishly exaggerated). This is also a post about the clothes themselves (itselves?). Though Wolfman will not credit me with this (he thinks I have too much, always, though I know for a fact he likes the way I dress), I've purged my closet quite a lot in the past few years since I took these photos. Most of the pieces I'm wearing in these pictures I have since passed along to charity shops, and I gaze upon them now as old friends, however ill-fitting or ratty they may have been or become.
My pervert dog pulled these pants out of the dirty laundry basket and chewed out the crotch. I mourned.
This blouse got me out of jury duty once--too hippie dippy.
My grandma's vintage Banana Republic dress. I wore it to an Easter picnic at my mother-in-law's house once with gigantic sunglasses, and a few of her guests agreed I looked like a movie star. This dress is fab.
I've had this top since high school, though it looked a lot different on me when I didn't have boobs.
My Pagan Festival 2011 outfit.
The fascinator was made by a friend of my husband.
Buffy wears this shirt in a season 5 episode. It fits her a little different.
Another piece from my high school wardrobe, the skirt, making into my adult life.
Easter! (Or, in our house, more like Eostre!) Mads found all the hidden eggs in the living room immediately, at expert level. Note to the Easter Bunny: you'll have to work a lot harder next year.
Our Ella Bella is 2 years old!
Everything is spring timin'.
Mads has been exploring LOTS of new playgrounds and the like.
Mads has also been spending a lot of time with his great-grandma, who's been doing some babysitting for us. My grandma's always been the most magical person in my life, and I'm so happy she has the opportunity to play a big role in my son's life.
April showers! (And storms!)
And, perhaps the biggest and deepest joy for me this month: at the age of 30 I finally got my driver's license. As Wolfman said, "Congratulations on becoming a legal vehicular menace."
Favorites!
FavoriteAcquisition - At the end of the month, an accidental (I swear!) trip to the Apex Goodwill resulted in a handful of good finds, but my favorite was this purple, floppy dragon. Normally, I wouldn't bring home a stuffed animal from a thrift store, but I recognized this particular stuffed animal--he used to be a string puppet, he was hand-created and sold at the Lazy Daze craft festival a number of years ago, and I know this because I have a couple of his brothers at my grandma's house. Likely, his strings got tangled, snipped, and then he was boxed up and donated. I just couldn't not adopt him. He lives on the back of our sofa now, lounging like a purple, winged house cat.
Favorite Supplement - Since turning 30, food has turned against me. I still love food, but certain things--like dairy, baked goods (particularly yeasty breads and sweets), and even raw vegetables--have turned decidedly anti-my gut. I picked up some chewable probiotics at Earth Fare, and while my digestive issues are not completely gone, they've certainly mellowed a bit. I mean, I can eat my morning toast (with butter and honey yum) now without suffering too terribly for it.
Favorite Beauty Product - Seriously. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. I was just talking to my co-workers about this: you know in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, how Toula's father sprays Windex on everything because he thinks it's a cure-all? That's me and raw apple cider vinegar. I use it to wash my hair, I use it to tone my skin, I drink a diluted solution of it for my digestive ailments, my immune system, and longevity, and I'm finding new uses for it daily. I am this close to pouring it in a spray bottle and carrying it with me everywhere I go.
Favorite Publication - Faerie Magazine is a new discovery for me. My grandma handed it to me while I sat in her living room watching Mads play, and I as I skimmed its pages, I immediately fell through the rabbit hole into a dreamy little springtime world full of magick.
Favorite Book - Territory by Emma Bull. I learned about Territory a few years ago, in my Shelfari days, but it wasn't until working on a project with my husband and friend Bruce (which will remain undisclosed for the moment), that I decided I definitely needed to read this book, a fantasy western retelling of the shoot-out at the OK Corral (or, actually, the preceding events). I've read two biographies of Doc Holliday (as well as named one of my grandma's cats Doc) if that tells you anything of my interest in this story. The fantasy element was beautiful and seamless, and I recommend this book to fans of fantasies and westerns both, or just fans of good story telling and characterization. In particular, the relationship between Doc and Wyatt Earp was so right, so needful and melancholy and bound. Bookslut did a much better review of the book here.
Favorite Television Show - Trailer Park Boys, season 9. Trailer Park Boys is one of those things I recommend to everyone, knowing full well it's not a show for everyone. I just recommend it on the off chance that somebody else (like my Grandma, for instance) might love it the way Wolfman and I do, which is as if these characters are real people, family, indulgently and unconditionally. Netflix recently released a 9th season of the show, which has been around for nearly 15 years now, on and off, with movies and stage shows. I'm calling it. Trailer Park Boys is the next Doctor Who.
Favorite Movie - Guardians of the Galaxy (2013). I had no idea what Guardians of the Galaxy was, even while selling the costumes at Halloween Alley last October to little kids. Wolfman had to tell me it was a Marvel thing, and as we're doing a catch-up of all the Marvel movies we missed while caring for an infant, we watched it this month. It was cute. Chris Pratt is cute. It probably wouldn't have been my favorite movie this month, if not for the fact that we didn't watch a lot of movies (in fact, we only watched three), but it was cute. I'd watch it again.
Favorite Music - Christopher Paul Stelling. All these flowers blooming, everything turning green had me in the mood for Sufjan Stevens and Ray LaMontagne and Nick Drake--pretty man voices accompanied by pretty guitar.
